First Meeting
Awoke from a deep sleep; the room was dark and damp. Must’ve been sleeping for hours and there was still the taste of dried blood in my mouth. When was the bleeding ever going to end? God my head ached from the dreams that had been haunting me for the last month. Yes the last month. Was it that long since Sid had left me for dead on the side of that lonely mountain road? Had it been that long? It seems like only yesterday.
LoyAnn and Sid had been the perfect couple. They’d met by chance as freshman at the local college. Their paths had crossed at the middle of the campus center on the first day of classes as they’d been hurrying to get to their first classes on time. Literally they’d run into each other. They’d been going in opposite directions on one of the highly trafficked walkways that had crisscrossed the campus. He’d been off to his first Physical Education class and she’d been on the way to her first of many Biology classes. Their paths had crossed when they’d run into each other with such force that both had dropped their books.
Instinctively they’d bent down to pick up the books which had fallen to the stone path. At first Sid hadn’t looked at LoyAnn, for he’d been so worried about his books that he hadn’t bothered to look up to see who he’d run into. But when he had, he couldn’t keep his eyes off of the lovely creature, he’d been at a loss for words; it’d been LoyAnn who had spoken first.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Don’t you look where you are walking?” she’d said.
“Well I’m sorry,” he’d replied in a rather sheepish tone.
“Well I hope so,” she’d said.
She’d been too pissed off to have noticed him until now, but when she’d seen him she’d seen what she liked. Tall, maybe 6’3-6’4, with dirty blond hair and dark blue eyes, yes it’d been those eyes that first had attracted her to him; those deep blue eyes.
“Please, let me help you get your things,” he’d answered. He’d gathered up her books as he stood up, it’d been then that first he noticed her. A bit on the tall side, maybe 5’10-5’11, long black hair that fell over her broad shoulders and green eyes, like some wild jungle cat, yes like a black panther that he’d seen once on some Discovery Channel special about the jungle, or something like that, and she’d had a great body!
“Listen”, she’d said in a rather sharp tone. “If you don’t mind I’m in a hurry here. I mean you weren’t looking where YOU were going and you almost killed me!”
“Hey, I said I was sorry, don’t get so pissed. OK?” he’d replied.
“Well really, how rude!” she’d screamed. “You are such a crude person! I don’t appreciate you using sure foul language in front of me..You ass hole!!”
Grabbing her books, she’d tromped off toward her first day of class, so far it’d been a disaster but she assured herself that it could only get better.
After a long day of classes LoyAnn had headed back to her dorm, she’d been a bit tired as she wandered slowly down the stone path that’d led back to her room. She’d looked up, to her surprise the dolt that almost had killed her this morning again had been coming toward her. This time however she’d seen him and tried to avoid him, but with little avail, he again had run into her, but this time he almost knocked her off of her feet.
“Oh my god, it’s you,” Sid had said. “I’m so sorry. I guess fate must have wanted us to meet. Actually I did see you. After we crashed into each other this morning I couldn’t get you off my mind. My classes were a bit boring and my mind was wandering to our chance meeting. By the way my name’s Sid, what’s your name?”
They both had begun to laugh. The early days of the relationship had begun. They’d started dating and after about three months moved into a small off campus apartment. They’d rented a small place, but that was all they really needed. They’d picked up some used furniture with a few extra bucks they both had made working part-time here and there. Some times Sid would bring home some ‘undelivered Pizza’ from his gig as a pizza delivery boy for Domino’s and she’d been waiting tables at one of the local snack shops in town, but that hadn’t been very fruitful in regards to tips, so she’d quit and started working as a cocktail waitress in a local night spot. The tips had been much better, however she had to endue the pats on the ass from the older male customers, but what the hell, she hadn’t been blowing them or anything!!
Yeah those had been the good old days she’d thought as she painfully tried to get out of the small bed in the dank room. It’d smelled of dampness and urine. The small room hadn’t seen a coat of paint for many years, the once colorful wallpaper had peeled off the walls and she’d seen the dirty ceiling above her. It had numerous pieces of plaster which had lodged themselves free and had been hanging there just waiting to fall to the filthy carpet that had covered the room. She hadn’t the luxury of a private toilet, so she needed to make the trek down to the end of the hall to use the communal washroom.
Finally, slowly, ever so slowly and painfully got to my feet. Had to pee. Opened the door to the room and with the help of the wall, made the way to the small bathroom at the end of the dark hallway. The walls were covered with some old peeling wallpaper and the toilet bowl was a shitty brown color.
‘God this place stinks. Doesn’t anyone ever clean this place?’
After peeing, made sure not to even touch the filthy toilet, finished cleaning myself and slowly made the way back to my small room which was now home. Looked at the ring, the beautiful diamond ring that was still on my finger. It’d been a miracle that it hadn’t been lost it in the struggle.
“Fuck you Sid. Fuck you.”
Fell back into a restless sleep.
